Reflection by Kayla D.

I wasn't aware that genocide was still occurring. I thought that it would have ended with the Holocaust and the Nuremberg laws. Knowing now that things like this are still happening in the 21st century scares me. No person should be murdered for not doing any crime. They have the right to live on this planet as much as anyone else. I went into complete shock after seeing all the images of the burned, shot and suffering men, woman and children who have no idea what they did to deserve such abuse. This whole thing is truly heart wrenching and I wish more could be done to bring it to an end. World peace should be the key goal right now and with things this horrible going on we are not being very successful. In cases like this of Darfur sovereignty is not a good thing. The UN should have all right to override sovereignty and take control of a country that is abusing the right to take control of itself and its people.
If humanism was the idea that ALL individuals matter this terrible cause of genocide completely denys the principal. In the opinion of the Jangaweed and the Sudanese government the non-Arabs don't matter at all. This relates to the holocaust. According to Hitler and the Nazi's the people of different ethnic backgrounds, such as the Jewish or the gypsies, or the people that were considered non-German didn't matter at all. This says alot about Human Rights. What rights do humans really have if the government can claim sovereignty and take everything away from them?
How can a country follow a government that turns there back on them and then doesn't take credit for it? The Sudanese government is fully supporting the Janjaweed but are denying the fact that they are. Images of the Sudan militia helicopters are seen bombing the villages of the people of Sudan, yet there government says they don't support what is going on. The government of Sudan is also denying the UN (united nations) access into there country. Why would they do this unless they had something to hide? This is similar to the German holocaust, the Nazis did all they could to clean up after themselves when people from other countries entered. They new they were doing wrong so they tried to cover it up yet they still continued to do it. Nothing much different is occurring in Sudan. The Sudanese government knows they are doing wrong by denying the people of Darfur,Sudan the rights as humans that they deserve so they are hiding it by claiming sovereignty and not letting others come into there country. Though the whole time they are not doing anything to stop the crimes they know they are committing.
The crimes against these people are not justified at all. They are ridiculous preferences of people of higher power. No one deserves to die for not doing anything. Especially in ways as cruel as the people of Darfur are being killed. I truly wish that more could be done to stop the cruel people like the Jangaweed and improve the lives of the victims as well as create futures for the victim children that were born in times like these. As long sovereignty is standing in the way no one can help them but their government. And their government is against them. In cases like these sovereignty is not a good thing but in other cases where it is being used for good it is. I think that it should have more limitations in order to stop things like this.
If sovereignty was stopped everywhere it may cause problems though. If the UN were to step into sovereignty in the United States I don't think it would go over well. Because of sovereignty the United States is a free country that gives its people the ability to practice their own things such as religion. If the UN tried to change that and make it so that all countries were to be ruled by one rule and the United States was no longer a free country it would not be good. That is why the ideal of sovereignty is such a delicate issue that needs just the right amount of boundaries. I believe these issues should be solved soon so that the victims of Darfur and be helped and world peace can finally be achieved.

Kayla's reflection was good. It is cool that she learned how bad it really is. There are a lot of people like Kayla who don't know about Darfur and can learn a lot from it.
